Farm Unit

Our farm unit begins the first of October and lasts two weeks. During this theme we take a field trip to a farm and pumpkin patch.

Activities:

1) After reading the story "Who's in the Shed", we make a classbook shaped like a shed. The children illustrate a page and complete the sentence - "I see a __."

2) Play the "Farmer Says" instead of "Simon Says". Have the children demonstrate chore movements such as: "Gather the eggs", "Feed the animals", "Milk the cow", "Hoe the garden", "Drive the tractor", "Ring the dinner bell", "Pick the beans", "Shuck the corn", etc.

3) Graph your favorite farm animal.

4) We have a pig day. For art we make pigs out of shapes. We make "pigs in a blanket" for our kindergarten cafe, and we do pig pen math:
- Pig Pen Math: Make pig flash cards with the numbers three to six on the pigs. Make several pigs for each number. The children make pens around each pig using popcicle sticks (matching the number of sticks to the number on each pig).
- Pigs in a blanket: Cut hot dogs in half, wrap each with crecent dough, and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes. -Yum Yum!-

5) We use our class pumpkin from our field trip for math activities. We estimate its circumference, how much it weighs, and how many seeds it has.

6) Make haystacks: 1 bag of Chow Mein noodles, 6 oz butterscotch chips, and 1/2 cup peanut butter. Mix in crock pot, cook until melted and drop in mounds on wax paper.

7) Sing "Down On Grandpa's Farm".

8) To the "Wheels on the Bus" tune sing:
- The cow on the farm goes "Moo, Moo, Moo"
- The pig on the farm goes "Oink, Oink, Oink"

9) Read "The Little Red Hen" and make bread.

10) Play Animal Sound Sort. Give the children a picture of a farm animal. Several children should have the same animal. When I ring the cow bell., the children start making their animal sounds and walk around the room looking for the rest of their herd or flock. We then switch cards and play again. They love this.

11) The children guess (and record) what is inside 3 farm feely boxes.

12) Make a farm book:
- A __ lives on a farm.
- A __ lives on a farm.
- But a __ doesn't.
